WASHINGTON – Texas, a traditionally conservative state, could become a battleground during the 2020 presidential election, a new poll suggests.

In a head-to-head matchup, former Vice President Joe Biden has 48% while President Donald Trump has 44%, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll published Wednesday. In addition, the president is locked in too-close-to-call matchups with six other Democratic 2020 presidential candidates.

According to the poll, Trump is within or just in excess of the margin of error when up against these six candidates: Trump is at 46% compared to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 45%; Trump at 47% while Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is at 44%; Trump at 48% compared to former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s 45%; Trump at 46% compared to South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s 44%; Trump at 47% while California Sen. Kamala Harris has 43%; and Trump at 46% compared to former San Antonio, Texas, Mayor Julian Castro at 43%.

The survey has is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,159 Texas voters from May 29 to June 4.

Democrats have honed in on Texas following O’Rourke’s competitive race against GOP Sen. Ted Cruz during the 2018 midterms.

Although the former Democratic congressman lost to Cruz, 50.9% to 48.3%, O’Rourke was the best performing Democrat in a Senate race in the state since 1988. In addition, several counties in the state flipped Democratic during the 2018 election, including Tarrant County, which includes Fort Worth and some of the surrounding Fort Worth and Dallas suburbs.

Since then, a number of Democratic presidential candidates have repeatedly campaigned in Texas, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, O’Rourke and Castro. Biden, following the release of his education plan, also spoke at a town hall organized by the American Federation of Teachers in Houston.

The new poll comes as Trump is looking to expand the electoral map during his 2020 re-election campaign. The president, who was victorious in 2016 in part because of his success in the Rust Belt, is gearing up this time around to target and seize on possible opportunities in New Mexico, Nevada and New Hampshire, according to Politico.

Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters in the Quinnipiac poll, Biden leads the large 2020 primary field with 30%. O’Rourke has 16%, Sanders is at 15% and Warren polls at 11%. Both Harris and Castro are at 4% and Buttigieg is at 3%.

With 407 Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters surveyed, there is a margin of error of plus or minus 5.8 percentage points.

Despite O’Rourke’s support among Texas Democrats relative to the rest of the 2020 Democratic primary field, a majority of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters in the state want to see the former congressman run against GOP Sen. John Cornyn.

According to the poll, 60% of such voters said they would prefer O’Rourke run against Cornyn in 2020 instead of running for president.

The Quinnipiac survey also found that Cornyn’s job approval rating is at 44%, with 33% of Texas voters disapproving of the job he’s doing in Congress. Comparatively, Cruz’s job approval is at 50% with voters in the state while 42% disapprove of the job Cruz is doing.
